Is Lettuce Or Spinach Better For You?

Updated: Dec 15, 2021

Ah, the age-old question; Do I put lettuce or spinach in my salad? First off, if this is even a question you have — you’re doing good! The best conflicts are those between two types of healthy greens!

First, let’s take a look at a fan favorite; lettuce. Probably every gardener has grown this bad boy at least once. It’s extremely fast-growing, takes up little space, isn’t too picky, and is the core to a good salad. But what’s in lettuce? Of course, it depends on the variety. Most lettuce types contain vitamin K and A. But the majority of lettuce is actually water. Hey, nothing’s wrong with water! In fact, humans need 3–4 liters of water a day (that’s about a gallon of water a day!).

The thing about lettuce is; it tastes pretty great. It can be cooked and eaten raw in a variety of ways and is added to many many foods. So what would be the result if you replaced lettuce with say — baby spinach?

Baby spinach is simply spinach harvested at a young age. It contains many nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin, nitrates, and quercetin, which are good for your health and wellbeing. It’s also filled with antioxidants. Spinach contains other vitamins such as A, C, and K. Not only that, but spinach contains iron and potassium.

So overall, spinach contains more vitamins and nutrients than lettuce. Simply put, spinach is better for your health than lettuce! The good thing is that spinach is just as easy to grow as lettuce. Especially when you harvest it young, spinach takes up about the same space as lettuce.

Maybe that’s one more thing you should add to your home garden, some baby spinach! Try replacing your lettuce with spinach and see the difference. If you can’t stand the taste, no worries, lettuce is good too! Cheers!!
