How To Plant Onions

How To Plant Onions

Planting onions can be beneficial to your recipes and your gardening portfolio. Not only can onions grow from seeds, which you can purchase at your local store, but they can also grow from bulbs, like garlic or tulips. We'll cover how to grow onions outside using both of these methods.

Planting Onions From Seeds

Onion seeds can be purchased from your local store or ordered online. They look like very very small round black beads. Plant the seeds 1/4 of an inch deep and lightly cover with soil. The plants will need to be spaced 4-6 inches apart, with rows 1 foot apart. Carefully water the soil, and be sure not to over-water. It will take about 7-10 days for the seeds to sprout.

Planting Onions From Bulbs

You can plant an onion from bulbs, which can be bought at a supermarket as food, or bought online. If you have a full sized onion bulb, you'll need to remove the outer skin and separate it into pieces, which should be able to be seen once the skin is off. It will naturally break into 2-3 pieces, which can each be planted. Plant the pieces with the roots facing down and carefully water. In a few weeks the onion bulbs will sprout. If you have a small onion bulb, it can be planted whole. Use the same process as with a full sized bulb, except you don't have to separate the pieces.

How Much Sunlight Do Onions Need?

Onions require 7-8 hours of sunlight a day to grow well. Make sure to plant them only after the last frost for your area has occurred.

When Should You Harvest Onions?

Harvest onions when the top leaves of the plants turn yellow and brown. When they begin to die, you can lightly uncover the top of the onion to check its size, then dig up the onion. Don't pull on the top leaves to pull it out, as the leaves will break and you can damage the onion.

Congrats, you now know how to plant onions! Cheers!!
