Planting potatoes is a great way to share the love of gardening in an easy an efficient way. Not only that, but you'll end up with great-tasting organic potatoes right out of your garden. So, how do you plant potatoes? Let's take it step by step.
What you'll need
- Store-bought Potatoes
- Gardening Space
How To Plant Potatoes
Potatoes are easiest planted directly from a potato itself. Have you ever noticed that if you leave a potato out for too long, it will grow something called "eyes"? These are green shoots that begin to grow from the potato. A potato is similar to a bulb of a plant. Think of it like the seed of the potato plant. All you have to do is cut the potato in half once it has begun to grow eyes or shoots. Take both halves, and plant them about 4-6 inches deep in an outdoor garden. Make sure the plant has 12 inches of space all around to grow in to.
Once that's done, carefully water the potato. In 2-4 weeks, you'll see the plant sprouted up and growing. Keep the soil well watered, as outdoor soil drains water very efficiently. The plant will grow into more of a bushel as it gets larger.

Potatoes need 6-8 hours of sunlight a day, so make sure they're planted in a spot that receives enough light. Within 2-3 months, the plant will be full grown. When the top of the potato plant dies, it's time to harvest. Dig up the potatoes from underneath the plant.
That's it, it's that easy! Potatoes are great projects to work on with kids and students, or just to add to your garden. Cheers!!
